LAS VEGAS (AP) - The father of a 7-year-old Las Vegas boy who died in November has filed a lawsuit saying state and county officials failed to protect the child from beatings.
A lawyer for father Roderick Devon Arrington Sr. tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal the second grader's death was preventable.
Officials say the county Department of Family Services received a call to its hotline Nov. 28 reporting apparent child abuse against Roderick "R.J." Arrington.
They say that while they were investigating, they got new information that R.J. was in the hospital with head injuries and extensive bruises. He later died.
R.J.'s mother and stepfather were charged with murder and child abuse.
A Clark County family services employee was fired in the fallout. Spokeswomen for family services and the school district declined comment.
