LAS VEGAS (AP) - The FBI is returning an agent to Las Vegas after several years of supervisory positions elsewhere to head the bureau's Nevada office.

Director Robert Mueller announced Monday that Laura Bucheit is the new special agent in charge of the FBI Las Vegas office.

Bucheit has been a special assistant to Mueller at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., since February 2010.

From 2005 to 2007, she oversaw terrorism investigations in Las Vegas and headed the regional Joint Terrorism Task Force before going to Washington, and then to San Francisco as assistant special agent in charge.

Bucheit's appointment follows Kevin Favreau's retirement in January as top FBI agent in Nevada.

Favreau now heads a nonprofit youth golf leadership program in Henderson.

William Woerner has been serving as acting special agent in charge.
