LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 48-year-old ex-con from Southern California is expected to face a Las Vegas judge on charges that he abducted a schoolgirl at knifepoint from a bus stop and sexually assaulted her.
Richard Martin Schlacta remained jailed Thursday in Las Vegas pending a Friday court appearance on charges including sexual assault of a victim under 14, kidnapping and battery with a deadly weapon.
Police say Schlacta tried to flee but was caught after the girl escaped, waved down a motorist and police were called about 6 a.m. Wednesday to a middle school about five miles east of the Las Vegas Strip.
Records show that Schlacta was convicted several times since 1993 in Los Angeles and Orange counties of felony drug, burglary, stolen property, vehicle theft and resisting police charges.
