Escape Foiled at Women's Prison

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A woman serving a life sentence for killing her
mother and hiding the body for three years didn't fool officers at
a southern Nevada prison.

Authorities say 59-year-old Brookey West tried to escape early
Friday from the Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center in
North Las Vegas.

A prison spokesman says West disguised herself and tried to walk
out while other inmates were on their way to breakfast.

But officers recognized and restrained her as she attempted to
pass through a security gate.

West was convicted of first-degree murder in 2001 for the
killing of her mother, 68-year-old Christine Smith.

Authorities say West sealed Smith's body in a plastic garbage
can in 1998 and left it in a rented storage unit. The odor led to
the body's discovery three years later.
