CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The state's largest newspaper and a business group are calling for the resignation of a Nevada assemblyman who said he'd vote to reinstate slavery if that's what his constituents wanted him to do.
In an editorial Wednesday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal said freshman Republican lawmaker Jim Wheeler of Minden is unfit for public service and should resign immediately.
Late Tuesday, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce also called for Wheeler's resignation.
Wheeler, elected in 2012, says his comments to a GOP gathering in August are being taken out of context. He apologized Tuesday and criticized the media.
During the same meeting with Storey County Republicans, Wheeler also said the state's tourism mecca of Las Vegas wants to take money from northern Nevada.
