LAS VEGAS (AP) - NV Energy says a downtown Las Vegas power outage that affected City Hall, nearby offices, the regional jail and one large hotel was caused by an equipment malfunction at a substation.

Company spokeswoman Kelly Mulroy says 1,325 customers were without power between just after 7:30 a.m. and almost 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The substation is at Charleston Boulevard and 1st Street.

Motorists reported traffic snarls in the area covering dozens of city blocks.

The outage stretched from the towering Stratosphere hotel-casino to the Bank of America office building and the Clark County Detention Center.

Police Officer Larry Hadfield says jail operations went into backup mode and visiting hours were suspended until 1 p.m.

But Hadfield says there were no security breaches.

The Clark County Regional Justice Center remained open and operational
