LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Nevada doctor and a Romanian-educated physician with no U.S. medical license have been convicted of defrauding chronically ill patients with an experimental stem cell implant procedure.
A federal court jury in Las Vegas found Henderson pediatrician Ralph Conti and self-described medical researcher Alfred Sapse guilty Wednesday of conspiracy, mail fraud and wire fraud charges.
U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden says each could face decades in prison at sentencing Feb. 27.
Attorneys for the 86-year-old Sapse and 51-year-old Conti say they'll appeal.
Bogden says Sapse convinced patients to undergo useless surgeries to implant placenta tissue, and that at least two patients became ill as a result.
Bogden says Sapse and Conti continued even after U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned them to stop in November 2006.
