LAS VEGAS (AP) - Police say a 51-year-old Las Vegas woman mailed off a nine-page suicide note before giving her mentally disabled adult son a lethal dose of prescription medication and trying to kill herself with an overdose.
Records show that Joanne Hafer was hospitalized pending a court appearance Wednesday on a felony murder charge in the death of her son, Matthew Hafer.
Police say the son was found dead, covered by a sheet in a reclining chair, and the mother was found alive on the floor Saturday afternoon in a mobile home just southeast of Nellis Air Force Base.
Las Vegas police say Joanne Hafer wrote a friend that she wanted to kill herself but was concerned that her son wouldn't be able to care for himself due to his seizures and disabilities.
