LAS VEGAS (AP) - A defense attorney says a Nevada state prison inmate who hanged himself last week battled mental illness before and after he was sentenced in May 2012 to 15 years to life for murder and attempted murder.
Prison officials say 34-year-old Ruben Martinez Arroyo was found dead in his solo cell Friday at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs.
The Clark County coroner ruled the case a suicide.
Deputy Clark County Public Defender Scott Coffee said Tuesday that Arroyo was apparently delusional when he shot and killed 21-year-old Julio Ceasar Gonzalez-Hernandez in Las Vegas in October 2008.
Coffee says Arroyo thought Gonzalez-Hernandez sexually assaulted his wife and 6-week-old daughter.
Arroyo also was convicted of shooting and wounding another man in September 2008.
Arroyo later pleaded guilty but mentally ill.
