DA Won't Press DUI Charges Against Constable

LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Clark County District Attorney says he won't pursue DUI charges against the head of the Las Vegas Township Constable's office.

District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Friday that the preliminary blood test taken in Constable John Bonaventura's Feb. 12 arrest showed he had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.

But Wolfson said preliminary tests aren't admissible in court, and another breath test showed his blood alcohol at 0.069 percent, or below the legal limit.

Wolfson also said a different Constable's Office vehicle may have been reported speeding, rather than the one Bonaventura was driving when he was stopped.

Bonaventura told the Las Vegas Review-Journal after his arrest that the incident was a set-up by county officials trying to abolish his much-scrutinized office.

County officials have denied those claims.
