LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Clark County district attorney is clearing five Las Vegas police officers in the shooting last April of a 49-year-old woman who investigators say pointed a handgun at officers trying to apprehend her in a stolen car.
DA Steve Wolfson issued findings Tuesday saying evidence showed the officers gave Sharmel T. Edwards "ample opportunity to end their confrontation in a nonviolent manner."
The car owner told police early April 21 that a woman he knew stole his 2001 Cadillac with a .45-caliber handgun in it.
Officers followed Edwards into a parking lot in northwest Las Vegas, and spent more than 30 minutes ordering her to surrender before she got out of the car.
Police say she pointed the gun at officers before the five officers shot her dead.
