LAS VEGAS (AP) - The district attorney is clearing two Henderson police officers in the July 23 death of an unarmed fugitive in a kidnap-slaying case who led police on a chase and tried to commandeer a passing motorist's vehicle.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson determined Wednesday that the slaying of 42-year-old Andy Puente Soto by officers David Rowlett and Daniel Medrano was lawful and reasonable.
Wolfson says he determined that Soto was a threat to others, and that Soto's movements with a hand in his waistband led officers to believe he had a weapon.
A joint police-FBI criminal apprehension team had been seeking Soto on a murder warrant stemming from a July 4 stabbing in Las Vegas.
Since becoming DA this year, Wolfson has cleared police in 19 pending officer-involved deaths.
