LAS VEGAS (AP) - Tourists hoping to take photos at the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign could soon have a safer time doing it.
Clark County commissioners have asked county staff to start work on a crosswalk and traffic lights spanning Las Vegas Boulevard near the sign.
The Las Vegas Sun reports the crosswalk would cost about $300,000, which is less than alternatives such as a pedestrian bridge to the landmark.
Commissioners asked staff in September to study ways to make the attraction safer and more inviting for visitors. They've already approved a project to add 20 more parking spaces at the sign.
Officials considered several ideas to enhance safety, including moving the entire sign from the median to the side of road. That option would have cost about $3.3 million.
