CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada election officials have filed a petition with the state Supreme Court challenging the residency qualifications of a disbarred Las Vegas attorney seeking to run for state controller.

The petition filed Monday asks the high court to strike John Michael Schaefer from the Democratic primary in June and declare him disqualified to hold the office.

Schaefer is a perennial candidate who has filed for numerous offices in various states.

Nevada law requires candidates for statewide office to be residents for two years preceding an election. The secretary of state's office says Schaefer is an active registered voter in Los Angeles County, where he ran unsuccessfully for the city council last year.

He was disbarred from practicing law in Nevada and California in 2005.
