County Commissioners Vote to Abolish Constable's Office

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Clark County commissioners have voted to abolish the Las Vegas Township Constable's office, a day after a state senator introduced a similar measure to get rid of the agency.

The commission voted unanimously Tuesday that the agency should lapse after Constable John Bonaventura's term expires in 2015. A proposal introduced Monday by Las Vegas Republican Sen. Michael Roberson calls for the office to be abolished as soon as the bill passes.

Bonaventura's office performs duties such as serving paperwork and carrying out evictions, but has faced scrutiny since he was elected in 2010.

Commissioners criticized the office for accounting practices that circumvent county oversight, as well as for filming a profanity-laced pilot for a reality television show.

The Las Vegas Sun reports Bonaventura said the effort will not work.
