NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - A North Las Vegas elected official
says the North Las Vegas jail may be closed as a cost-saving
City Councilwoman Anita Wood tells KSNV-TV the jail could be shut down within weeks due to the city budget crisis.
Wood calls the idea scary, but says employee unions aren't
making contract concessions and the cash-strapped city has to
balance its books.
The facility has held up to 225 inmates. One wing closed last
month and about 70 misdemeanor offenders were released after a jump in sick days taken by jailers.
City police Sgt. Tim Bedwell says inmates would be sent to
facilities in Las Vegas, Henderson or elsewhere.
He says some of the 150 employees at the North Las Vegas jail
might also get jobs in those facilities.
