Child Suicide in Clark County Up Fourfold in Three Years
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Officials say suicides among Clark County children and teens were up fourfold in 2011 compared with a few years earlier.
A report from the Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy shows 16 suicide deaths last year, up from four each in 2008 and 2009, and seven in 2010.
Authors of the report call for more suicide prevention efforts in elementary schools and expanded gun safety campaigns.
The report on child deaths is produced annually by the institute, which is based at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Out of the 237 child deaths in 2011, researchers counted 19 homicides and 37 accidental deaths.
Most of the others were linked to natural causes, such as chronic disease or complications from premature birth.
