Bill Seeks $40M for Pre-K at Some Nevada Schools

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Clark County School District would get millions of dollars to help young children learn to speak and understand English before entering elementary school.

SB291 introduced Monday by Republican Sen. Minority Leader Michael Roberson of Henderson would require prekindergarten programs in Clark County to teach children who are not proficient in English.

Clark County is the largest school district in Nevada and among the largest in the nation.

The bill would authorize $20 million in each of the next two years to implement the program and provide necessary teacher training.

It also calls for the school district to set up an evaluation system to judge the effectiveness of the program.
