Bill Proposes Abolishing Vegas Constable's Office

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Republican state Sen. Michael Roberson has introduced a bill to do away with the Las Vegas Township Constable's office.

The proposal introduced Monday would give the sheriff the responsibilities of the constable, which include serving paperwork and carrying out evictions. The bill applies to cities with 500,000 people or more, which means Las Vegas.

The constable's office has faced scrutiny since John Bonaventura was elected in 2010.

It's been criticized for creative accounting practices that circumvent county oversight, as well as for filming a profanity-laced pilot for a reality television show.

Roberson's bill comes a day before the Clark County Commission is expected to consider its own proposal to abolish the office.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Bonaventura is trying to prevent the commission vote in court.
