LAS VEGAS (AP) - A project to put a bypass around Boulder City has stalled after researchers found naturally occurring asbestos in the area.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the state had put a $12 million contract out for bid for work including utilities and a retaining wall, but canceled it in light of research by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

John Terry of the Nevada Department of Transportation said Monday that his agency needs to do more analysis and testing of the site. Researchers have described the asbestos as potentially toxic, but it's unclear whether it's a public health risk.

The state transportation board approved up to $400,000 for the study.

The 12-mile Boulder City Bypass is one of the key elements of a proposed Interstate 11 linking Las Vegas and Phoenix.
