LAS VEGAS (AP) - A federal judge in Las Vegas found a
self-proclaimed rabbi, lawyer and leader of a "sovereign
citizens" anti-government movement guilty in a $1.3 million
Shawn Rice waived his right to a jury and represented himself
during the 1½-day trial before U.S. District Judge James Mahan.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Rice showed no emotion as he was found guilty Tuesday of 14 felony conspiracy and money laundering charges.
Mahan also found Rice guilty of charges stemming from being a
fugitive for nearly two years. He was arrested at his home in
Seligman, Ariz., in December after a 10-hour armed standoff with
Rice argued he was entrapped and that Mahan had no authority to
take action against him.
He remains in federal custody pending sentencing.
