Las Vegas Teacher Accused Of Hitting Autistic Children In Class

A Las Vegas special education teacher is facing felony child abuse charges after she was accused of hitting autistic children in her classroom.

Authorities say Mamie Hubbard-Washington used a stick on some kids ages six through eight at Doris Reed Elementary School in northwest Las Vegas.

She appeared yesterday (Thursday) before a Las Vegas judge who
let her remain free without bail pending a preliminary hearing on
September 26th.

Hubbard-Washington is accused of verbal abuse and physical force
including hitting, pinching, scratching and grabbing five autistic students she taught from April 2006 to March 2007, according to a criminal complaint.

Officials say the children all have problems communicating verbally.

Clark County school officials say Hubbard-Washington on on paid
administrative leave.
