Firefighters Offer Pay Raise Concession...At a Price

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A firefighters' union is proposing to cut cost-of-living raises from 3 percent to 2 percent in return for two more paid leave days and a two-year contract extension.

The union has been criticized for not reducing pay raises like other Clark County employee unions to help the county budget crunch.

Ryan Beaman, president of the International Association of Firefighters Local 1908, says the proposal approved by firefighters in a vote last week shows they are willing to do their part in the economic downturn.

Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani (jun-killy-AH'-nee) wants the proposal to be discussed in a closed session on Aug. 4.

Commissioner Steve Sisolak says two more paid-leave days would cost $1.3 million but only $1.2 million would be saved with the reduced pay raises.
