North Las Vegas Center Getting Running Track, Sculpture

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - Officials are dedicating a new running track and sculpture at a Clark County community center in a North Las Vegas neighborhood.

County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly is due to head a ceremony Friday morning at the Dr. William U. Pearson Center on West Carey Avenue near Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The 16-foot steel sculpture titled "Reach" is by local artists Dayo Adelaja, Sylvester Collier, Denise Duarte, Adolfo Gonzalez and Vicki Richardson. The base is inscribed with a quote from George Washington Carver.

The $12.7 million Pearson center also has a gym, fitness and computer facilities, and classrooms.

It's named after a physician who chaired the University Medical Center board and was the first black Las Vegas city councilman and Clark County commissioner. He died in February 2004.
