LAS VEGAS (AP) - A coroner's jury has found Las Vegas police
justified in the fatal shooting of a mentally ill man who refused to put down his two pistols in a standoff outside his own.
Officers told the Clark County jury on Friday that John Haines was drunk, suicidal and armed when he walked the home with his wife
and toddler inside.
Officer Charon Griswold testified that Haines ignored orders to put down the guns. He said he was concerned Haines would commit a
Griswold was one of six officers who opened fire on Haines. A jury deliberated for about 30 minutes before reaching the ruling.
Haines' wife, Sarah Haines, told the jury that her husband suffered from bipolar disorder and had been suicidal.
