DNA Leads to Murder Arrest

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police say DNA evidence has led to an arrest in an October 1996 murder case.

Records show that 60-year-old Paul Alexander is being held at the Clark County jail pending a court appearance in the stabbing death of 61-year-old Joseph Meli in his home.

Investigators say Alexander was the ex-husband of a woman who lived with Meli at the time.

Police say Alexander was not considered a suspect immediately after the murder but his DNA was recently matched to that found at the crime scene.

Las Vegas detectives took up the cold case at the prompting of a close friend of the victim.

It was not clear if Alexander had an attorney. Police say the investigation is ongoing and that they are still trying to establish a motive for the slaying.
