Searchlight Judge Dies

SEARCHLIGHT, Nev. (AP) - State court officials are mourning the death of the longtime judge in a rural township about 50 miles south of Las Vegas.

The state Supreme Court says Searchlight Justice of the Peace Wendell Turner died Tuesday at age 72 after an apparent stroke.

Supreme Court Chief Justice James Hardesty cited Turner's service as a state highway patrol officer and his three terms on the bench after being elected in 1994.

Hardesty says state courts lost a judge and a friend.

Turner is credited with pushing for construction of the Searchlight Justice Center in the late 1990s to replace a courtroom-office trailer along U.S. Highway 95.

The Clark County Commission is expected to name a replacement for Turner, who was one of eight rural justices of the peace in Clark County.
