LAS VEGAS (AP) - Solar manufacturer First Solar Inc. plans to build the largest photovoltaic power plant in the U.S. near an existing facility in Nevada.
Tempe, Ariz.-based First Solar said Wednesday the 48-megawatt plant will produce power for roughly 30,000 homes.
It'll be added to the existing 10-megawatt El Dorado plant run by Sempra Generation in Boulder City, about 40 miles east of Las Vegas.
First Solar marketing and business executive vice president John Carrington says construction on the Copper Mountain Solar plant will begin this year and will be completed by 2010.
Other companies have larger solar power plants under development, but Carrington says they use different solar technology.
The plant is expected to create about 200 jobs.
Carrington says Sempra Generation, a subsidiary of San Diego-based Sempra Energy, hasn't signed a power-purchase agreement yet.
