Police: Vegas officer shoots man brandishing knife

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police say an officer shot a man as he attempted to go into his residence after threatening himself and his roommate and brandishing two knives.

Police said Sunday that 37-year-old Julio Cesar Velazquez is in stable condition at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in Las Vegas after the officer fired one shot after 2 a.m.

Authorities say they went to a residence in eastern Las Vegas and found Velazquez armed with the knives in front of the home Police say Velazquez did not follow repeated orders to drop the weapons, and instead placed a knife to his own throat.

Authorities say Velazquez tried to go back inside to his 71-year-old roommate when he was shot.

Police say the incident is the seventh officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas this year.
