LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 22-year-old Las Vegas man has pleaded guilty
to second-degree murder in the random shooting death of a mother of
two almost a year ago.
Calvin Lee Kirklin admitted Monday in Clark County District
Court that he shot Blanca Gonzalez as she sat in her vehicle March
28, 2008, at a red traffic signal east of downtown Las Vegas.
Gonzalez died the next day of a gunshot wound to the head. Her
children, ages 15 and 11, were in the car but were not hit by
Kirklin initially told police he was drunk and a gun he was
handling accidentally discharged.
His plea avoids trial, and prosecutors dropped three firearm
Kirklin faces 10 years to life in prison at sentencing, set for
