30,000 Party In Downtown Las Vegas For New Year's

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Officials for the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas say 30,000 celebrated the start of 2009 there, a
record crowd for the attraction.

Spokesman Jeff Victor of the Fremont Street Experience says the attraction gambled by allowing locals into the Wednesday night event for free, but said it paid off in food, alcohol and merchandise sales.

Tourists paid $20 to get into the event.

Las Vegas officials say 290,000 people celebrated the new year citywide. Many people stayed on the Las Vegas Strip.
