Baby's Body Being Exhumed In Advance Of Retrial

LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Clark County coroner is exhuming the body of a 14-month-old girl who has been dead for more than a decade in preparation for the retrial in January of a babysitter accused of killing her.

A judge ordered Friday's exhumation after prosecutors said a new examination will show that Kierra Harrison was fatally injured by Alica Wegner.

The girl died in March 1997, two days after being cared for by Wegner, a licensed day care worker.

Wegner's lawyer says he has an expert who'll testify the girl was hurt three to 10 days before she died.

Wegner is now 44. She's free on bail pending trial Jan. 6 on a felony murder charge.

The Nevada Supreme Court overturned her conviction in 2000 after deciding jurors received improper instructions at her 1998 trial.
