NV Law Could Target Marriage Witnesses

LAS VEGAS (AP) - At the request of some Las Vegas wedding chapel
owners, a state lawmaker says he's willing to sponsor legislation setting a minimum age for marriage witnesses.

Assemblyman Tick Segerblom is considering legislation setting the minimum age at either 16 or 18 after reports that children as young as 12 have served as witnesses.

The Las Vegas Democrat says chapel owners seem concerned about
it, and he wants to discuss the issue with Clark County Clerk Shirley Parraguirre.

Parraguirre says she questions the need for the legislation because the issue of minors being witnesses hardly ever comes up.

But Vegas Adventure Wedding Chapel co-owner Joan Bojorquez says
setting a minimum age would put chapel owners more at ease.

State law doesn't set a minumum age for those signing marriage licenses as witnesses.
