LAS VEGAS (AP) - A personal injury lawyer who calls himself "The Heavy Hitter" in TV ads has been hit with a fine for missing the first day of a client's murder trial.
District Judge Michelle Leavitt ordered Glen Lerner to pay nearly $2,500 in jury fees and state costs and to pay the attorney's fees for the new murder trial of his former client, Mario Lino.
Lerner apologized for missing the January trial date. Lerner says he was out of town on a sabbatical and did not explain why he couldn't return.
Lino is charged with killing a man he suspected was having an affair with his wife. He faces a possible life sentence.
Lerner doesn't typically try murder cases but says he took the case because Lino had once worked on his pool.
Lino is now represented by the public defender's office.
