LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Lyon County eighth-grader correctly spelled
"alluvium" to win the Nevada State Spelling Bee.
12-year-old Cheyenne Lawrence, who attends Silver Stage Middle
School in Silver Springs, advances to the National Spelling Bee in
Washington, D.C., on May 30.
Connor Dayton of Reno's Swope Middle School was runner-up.
Forty-eight students competed in the event Saturday at Cimarron-Memorial High School. It was sponsored by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The winning word, alluvium, is sand, gravel or similar material deposited by running water.
It marked Lawrence's second year competing in the bee.
