Fugitive Slain by Las Vegas Police ID'd

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities have identified a California fugitive who was shot and killed in a gunbattle with a Las Vegas police officer as 28-year-old Jeffrey Martrell Williams.

The deputy chief of the U.S. marshal's office in Las Vegas, Javier Jimenez, says Williams was sought on a California state parole warrant on an underlying charge of robbery in a case from Anaheim.

Las Vegas police say the officer involved was wounded and treated overnight at University Medical Center and released. His name hasn't been made public yet.

A second man who was arrested after the shooting also has not been named.

Authorities say Williams crashed a car and shot the officer while fleeing from police. A marked patrol cruiser tried to stop him and the other man about 6:20 p.m. Thursday in downtown Las Vegas.

Officers returned fire and killed Williams.

The other suspect was arrested a short time later. It's not clear if he was armed.
