Vegas Couple Leaves $20 Million to Desert Research Institute

LAS VEGAS (AP) - The estate of a long-time Las Vegas couple has left $20 million to establish an endowment at the Desert Research Institute in southern Nevada.

DRI President Stephen Wells says the gift from the estate of Sulo and Aileen Maki will propel the resarch facility's hydrologic sciences and water resources program to a position of global leadership.

The Sulo and Aileen Maki Endowment will be presented to the Board of Regents when it meets at College of Southern Nevada this week.

The couple made substantial donations to the institute over the last four decades.

Sulo Maki died in 1985. Aileen Maki died last August.
