The Southern Nevada Water Authority is making changes to a program to rebate to residents and businesses $1.50 for each square foot of grass they replace with water-smart landscaping.
Water authority officials say the change -- effective January first -- is designed to encourage large property owners to switch from thirsty landscaping to drought-tolerant foliage.
Rebates in 2007 were $2 per square foot up to 1,500 square feet and $1 per square foot after that.
The water authority says its Water Smart Landacaping program has helped convert almost 100 million square feet of grass since 1999.
It says the program helped save 18 billion gallons of water in 2006, compared with 2002 -- even though 330,000 more people have moved to the Las Vegas area.
