NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - Police have arrested a young couple
on suspicion of murder and child abuse and accused them of staging
a car accident in the desert to cover up the killing of the woman's' 4-year-old son.
North Las Vegas police responded to the scene of the accident in the desert about a mile north of a major intersection of Interstate 215 on Tuesday morning.
Officer Sean Walker says the area is frequented by four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles, but the driver, 21-year-old Trevor Carter, was in a four-door passenger vehicle.
A 3-year-old girl in the car suffered no injuries, despite Carter telling police he ran into a dirt embankment in a crash that caused the boy's death.
Carter and the child's mother, 24-year-old Amber Scott, were arrested that evening.
Carter was being held on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse. Scott was booked on three counts of child abuse and neglect.
No charges had yet been filed by the district attorney, a clerk at the North Las Vegas Justice Court said, and it was not clear who would represent the couple.
The Clark County coroner's office said the 4-year-old's death was a homicide caused by blunt abdominal trauma.
