RENO, Nev. (AP) - A federal judge has postponed Harvey Whittemore's sentencing until Sept. 30 to give his defense team more time to prepare after the former Nevada lobbyist was convicted of violating campaign contribution laws.

The 61-year-old attorney and developer was found guilty in May of three felony counts related to his unlawfully funneling more than $133,000 to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Judge Larry Hicks originally had set sentencing for Sept. 23 at the federal courthouse in Reno.

Prosecutors are asking him to send Whittemore to prison for more than four years. Whittemore's lawyers are asking for probation. He also faces up to $750,000 fines. His lawyers have promised to appeal the conviction to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
