VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A Ventura County supervisor is accusing the county's top elections official of violating campaign finance law.
In a complaint filed with the Campaign Finance Ethics Commission, Supervisor Steve Bennett says his re-election bid was hindered by Clerk-Recorder Mark Lunn. Bennet says Lunn failed to inform him of the activities of an outside interest group until late in the race.
Bennett tells the Ventura County Star that he believes if Lunn had acted more quickly, his campaign might have been better able to counteract a negative mail barrage that labeled him a hypocrite. The effort was sponsored by Citizens for a Better Ventura County.
Lunn said it would be inappropriate to comment on the complaint because the matter is pending.
Bennett won his fourth term Nov. 6 in a close race against Bob Roper.
