LAS VEGAS (AP) - Top Republicans say Mitt Romney lost his bid to unseat President Barack Obama because he didn't offer specific policy proposals and responded too timidly to criticism.

In interviews as the Republican Governors Association meets in Las Vegas, a half dozen top Republicans say the party needs to learn lessons from Romney's loss and fix its problems ahead of 2016.

These officials say the party will lose again if it keeps running the same playbook based on platitudes in place of detailed policies. Instead, they say, the GOP needs to learn the lessons from its loss, respect voters' savvy and put forward an agenda that appeals beyond the white male voters who are its base.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says Republicans need to acknowledge, in his words, "we got beat."
