CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposal to earmark $2 million for a nonprofit group to recruit teachers for at-risk schools in Clark County has won the endorsement of the Senate Finance Committee.
The committee on Tuesday approved SB517, sending the bill to the Senate floor.
Funding for Teach for America was part of Sandoval's overall budget but it was pulled and drafted into a separate bill after running into opposition from some Democrats. Teach for America is a nonprofit group that recruits recent graduates and professionals to teach in urban and rural schools for two years.
Democratic Sen. Joyce Woodhouse of Las Vegas voiced concerns about spending money on teachers who will leave.
But Clark County officials, who have been involved with the program since 2004, say many teachers decide to stay.
