MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Mitt Romney's campaign is putting some distance between the presidential candidate and his new running mate's controversial budget proposals today.
Romney's selection of Paul Ryan has injected some energy into Republicans as the two campaign together in battleground states this weekend. But with Democrats characterizing Ryan's ideas as outside the mainstream, campaign officials emphasize it will be Romney's vision that will set the agenda.
Democrats have decried Ryan's budget proposals, saying they'd turn Medicare into a voucher system and gut education and other programs. Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod tells CNN that Ryan's selection "is meant to thrill the most strident voices in the Republican Party" but should trouble the middle class, seniors and students.
Senior Romney adviser Ed Gillespie says while Romney would have signed Ryan's budget if landed on his desk as president, he will "be putting forward his own budget" if elected.
