RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Reno City Council has decided to wait until next year to develop policies for the legal sale of medical marijuana.

The council voted 6-1 Wednesday to return to the matter in April after state regulations for marijuana dispensaries are expected to be finalized.

Assistant City Manager Cadence Matijevich says that will give the council a chance to consider whether the state regulations alone would be adequate. She says if the state regs are adopted earlier, the city could return to medical pot before April.

Use of medical marijuana has been legal in Nevada since voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2000, but there previously was no legal way to purchase the drug.

Under the new law signed in June, Washoe County will get up to 10 medical marijuana dispensaries.
