CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A state senator wants to close an omission he sees in Nevada law when it comes to teens and smoking.
Republican Sen. James Settelmeyer of Minden says while state law prohibits anyone under 18 from buying cigarettes there's nothing preventing them from using tobacco.
Settelmeyer says gatherings of teens on "smokers' corners" near school campuses are testament to the fact that just banning the purchase of tobacco isn't enough to deter the habit.
He wants to change that. On Thursday he presented a SB177 making it a crime for youngsters to possess or use tobacco.
Under his bill detailed before the Senate Judiciary Committee, underage smokers could be ticketed by police officers. A first offense would carry a $25 fine. A second offense would be $50; and a third, $75.
