National GOP at Odds With Local Republicans Over Online Gambling

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A new GOP platform adopted at the party's national convention in Tampa, Fla., last week encourages a ban on online gambling and is at odds with the positions many elected Nevada Republicans take.

The plank in the platform is listed under the heading "Making the Internet Family-Friendly" and links online gambling to gambling addiction.

The official party statement comes as many major players in Nevada's casino industry ask Congress to legalize Internet poker nationally. Experts believe Nevada could be the center of a regulated Internet gambling market.

Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/PQQOK0) Nevada has set the gold standard in gambling, and will continue to work on a secure online gambling arena.
