NEW YORK (AP) - The president of MSNBC says a staffer has been fired after sending an offensive tweet suggesting the right wing will hate a Cheerios ad that features a biracial couple.

MSNBC President Phil Griffin said the tweet was "outrageous and unacceptable" in his apology Thursday. MSNBC had also tweeted an apology on the same account.

The offending tweet had prompted the head of Republican National Committee to urge GOP officials to avoid appearances on MSNBC because of what he called the network's "petty and demeaning" attacks. In a statement later, GOP chief Reince Priebus said he accepted the apology and withdrew the boycott request.

Priebus said he plans to "aggressively monitor the network to see whether their pattern of unacceptable behavior actually changes."
