LAS VEGAS (AP) - A federal judge says the Department of Justice must release more details of its investigation into former Nevada Sen. John Ensign.

Last week's ruling by U.S. District Judge John Bates comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

The Justice Department has refused to release records in the case citing privacy reasons.

But the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/14WMWv7 ) reports the judge ruled the public's interest in how the government handled the investigation and made a determination not to charge Ensign outweighed any privacy concerns.

Ensign resigned from Congress in 2011 amid an investigation into whether he had broken any laws to try to hide an extramarital affair he had with a campaign staffer and wife of a top aide.
