RENO, Nev. (AP) - Republican Mitt Romney performed better among a number of constituencies than John McCain did against Barack Obama four years ago. But he continued to suffer from the gender gap that has plagued the GOP in Nevada the last three presidential elections.
The former Massachusetts governor carried the independent and third-party members that make up one-third of Nevada's electorate and sided with Obama last time around. He came up short in Washoe County but lost by only about one-third of the margin that McCain did.
But among women, exit polls show Obama won by 56 percent to 42 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent. Women under age 30 backed the president by a 2-to-1 margin. Nevada voters also oppose outlawing abortion by a 2-to-1 margin.
